Molina Again?

The Giants re-signed catcher Benjie Molina. In what is a mixed-feelings bag, I'm wondering what is done that will help the team win the World Series. His offensive numbers were down last year and I'm not sure we can see a repeat of '08. Even with good common offensive numbers (avg., HR, RBI) he is still the slowest player in baseball and his on-base percentage is horrific.

He handles the staff well, but could another catcher do the same? Is Molina's signing a hint that the Giants think Buster Posey isn't ready for prime time for a few more years? I don't see the Giants activity in the off season as indicative that they're ready to push for the title just yet. Wait til next year...again?

Steroids and The Hall of Fame

Grant at McCovey Chronicles pens his opinion on the way the steroids issue has affected how we view the Hall of Fame. His opinion is that using players shouldn't be banned, but the steroid issue, which is complex, should be taken into consideration.

As a side note, the picture he uses is the one I mentioned in my last post showing Barry Bonds, of all players.

Big Macs Now Trans-Fat AND Roid Free

Okay, when the Mark McGwire steroid admission story broke, the photo used on my Yahoo homepage showed McGwire at the bag at first holding a runner on. The runner was in the picture. Purely by coincidence, and no other fate, the runner was Barry Bonds.

Congratulations Andre Dawson

Congratulations, Andre Dawson. Newest electee into the Hall of Fame. He's the only one this year to be elected. I'm guessing Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar will make it next year.

I was just watching a video of Dawson clips. He hit a triple in Houston, and Jose Cruz with his big mop was chasing the ball down at the fence in that rainbow uni. Man, those guys should be in the Hall of Fame just for hair and uniforms!

Foul Balls and Fair

I've said it before, but I want to do a series here about the foul balls and home runs that I've caught over the years. My first foul ball came in 1982, and my most recent was just this year. Home run balls are always special, too, especially when you get three in one game. Stay tuned.
